Blue Hawks Get Split In Sam Milanovich Tourney
November-30-08

Friday night against Montana State University-Western the Blue Hawks came away with a 76-64 nonconference victory in its first game in the Sam Milanovich Classic.

Walker, a 6-foot-5 senior forward scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the first half. Scheltinga, a 7-foot senior center, had a season-high 15 points. Nathan Lebsock scored 10 points while Mark Versen had eight and Tomaul Hawkins added seven.

“They’re comfortable at home but the biggest thing is we’re starting to get confident with each other,” DSU coach Ty Orton said. “We don’t have a superstar and we don’t want a superstar,” Orton said. “It’s easier to scout that way.”

On Saturday night Rocky Mountain College held on to beat the Blue Hawks 74-64 in the final game of the Sam Milanovich Classic.

After a slow start for the Blue Hawks they came back and made a game of it, getting as close as five points with less than three minutes to play. “Shots weren’t falling,” Orton said. “We had some great looks in the first half.” Sean Burnham cut the lead to 68-63 with a pair of free throws with 2:56 left, but DSU couldn’t get any closer.

Ryan Ernst made an impact off the bench late when he hit back-to-back 3-pointers and a pair of free throws that cut Rocky’s lead to 68-61. He scored eight points. Nathan Lebsock and Josh Walker led the Blue Hawks with 10 points each.

The teams combined for 62 personal fouls; DSU had 33 and Rocky 29.

The Blue Hawks are now preparing for its Dakota Athletic Conference opener at Minot State University next Saturday, December 6.

Blue Hawks Get Great Experience Playing Tough NCAA DII Tourney
November-25-08

Nathan Lebsock scored 25 points but Dickinson State but lost to NCAA DII Colorado Christian on Friday night in an exhibition men’s basketball game at the Metropolitan State Classic 78-69.

“We had our chances to win and we didn’t do the right things on the defensive side and we missed our free throws,” DSU coach Ty Orton said.

DSU had 14 steals, forced 19 turnovers, shot 44 percent from the field, and Lebsock was 6 of 9 from beyond the arc.

“There were a lot of situations where we were right there,” Orton said. “We were really impressed with the way the guys played and how they stepped up in a physical environment.”

NCAA DII Metro State defeated Dickinson State 65-58 in another nonconference exhibition men’s basketball game at its tournament on Saturday night.

“We didn’t put two halves together in order to win it,” DSU coach Ty Orton said. “That’s a dang good team right there.”

Yazeed Saajid scored a team-high 21 points to lead the Blue Hawks; while Nathan Lebsock and Tomaul Hawkins each scored 11 points. The Hawks return home next Friday night to host Montana-Western at the Sam Milanovich Classic at Scott Gymnasium.

The Hawks also played another tough NCAA DII University, Johnson & Wales University, and came up just short by a score of 68-67.

Dickinson State seemed to be galvanized by their 30-point trouncing courtesy of the MSU-Northern Lights 10 days ago and turned the tables tonight at Scott Gym, earning a convincing 78-69 victory. It was the Blue Hawks’ fourth win of the year against only three defeats. It also served notice that Ty Orton’s troops can make adjustments and that they are willing to play defense. The final nine-point margin of the victory is deceptive as the game wasn’t really that close.

The Hawks grabbed an early lead and held double-digit advantages for the majority of the game, and nearly the entire 2nd half, until finally the Lights crept to a less than 10-point deficit but not until the game was nearing its conclusion.

The Blue Hawks limited MSUN to just 10-of-30 shooting in the opening frame and 32 points total, while their game on November 7th went decidedly the other direction. On that night, the Lights opened quickly hitting 13-of-25 (52%) but the Hawks converted only eight-of-28 (29%) and thus MSUN had a commanding 39-22 lead at the break en route to their 81-51 thrashing of DSU.

The Hawks defense was the difference. Eleven turnovers committed by MSUN in the first 20 minutes and five steals by Dickinson State helped them to a 42-32 lead at intermission. Josh Walker had 20 points at the break and 32 on the evening to lead DSU in scoring.

With five minutes left in the half, Dickinson State was experiencing an offensive lull, and it appeared that the rustiness of the Lights was working itself free when two rainbow-shaped bolts of lightening by Mark Versen stretched DSU’s lead to 20. Those six points seemed to refuel the Hawks offense, but another lull as the half wound down allowed MSUN pull to within eight points and DSU had one possession to make some sort of statement before intermission. Enter Versen again and this time it was his medium-range jumper--the shooting distance that only seems extinct--as the clock expired that pushed the joyous Hawks into the locker room with the aforementioned 10-point lead and the game’s momentum. Versen made the most of his energy; he yanked down three rebounds and was credited with one steal, but was on the hardwood just six out of the game’s first 20 minutes.

Branden Thomas ended the game with 11 points and was the Blue Hawks’ number two scorer. Five of his tallies came on six free-throw attempts and he and Versen shared team-high honors in rebounds with six. Sean Burnham had a team-high four assists and put up eight points with an even split between the field and free-throw line.

MSUN could manage just 23-of-54 (43%) field goal shooting for the game. Sharp shooter Chris Johnson hit 10-of-14 (71%) shots and 29 points in the previous encounter between these two teams, but was “held” to eight-of-16 (50%) and 21 points tonight. DSU’s free-throw percentage was not stellar, but 38 opportunities still brought 25 successes (66%) whereas MSUN converted just 18-of-29 (62%) attempts.

Dickinson State now travels to Denver, Colo., to play Colorado Christian College, Metro State College and Johnson & Wales on November 21, 22 and 23 respectively in the Metropolitan State Classic Tournament.
