At the close of the fall golf season, both Dickinson State teams are in good position to challenge for the conference titles. Both teams won the DAC in 2007 and the women also won titles in 2008, 2004, 2003 and 2002.

The women trail Black Hills State University (12 team points) but are tied with Minot State University (9). The Blue Hawks had an excellent final match before their recess scoring five team points at the Minot State Invite. DSU bested BHSU by four strokes and were led by Krista Lambrecht who shot an even 88-88 (176) and took 2nd place; Whitney Stanley of MSU won the two-day tournament by shooting 82-89 (171).

The men are in second place with eight points and trail MSU (10). For the men, TJ Poulsen was the overall leader, shooting a stellar 74-73 (147). He was followed closely by Tony Elliot (149) and Kyle Chan (151) but the Hawks could only manage a team tie with Minot State.

For the fall season in the individual standings, Elliot (4th) and Thomas Wiekle (5th) are the leaders for the men’s and Lyndsey Kent-Filkowski (4th) and Kelsey Boedeker (6th) are the top two DSU women players.

The conference suspends play until April when the teams gather at the South Dakota Mines Invite (April 12-13) in Rapid City, S.D.

The men’s and women’s golf teams opened their 2008-09 season with two tournaments: the Jimmie Invite (Sept 3) and they were home this weekend (Sept 7-8) hosting several teams in the DSU Blue Hawk Classic at Heart River Golf Course.

Kyle Chan won the men’s individual title after a sizzling 68 on day two. His 145 total edged Jordan Kelly (147, Minot State) by just two strokes. Chan was down six strokes to Kelly after the first round on Sunday, and in fact, there were no fewer than eight total golfers ahead off Chan. His second day score was a marvelous four shots better than any other player and seven better than anyone who finished in the top five.

Lyndsey Kent topped the women’s field. Her 78 on day one gave her a three-shot advantage and she hung on with two-day total of 162 to win by just one stroke over Whitney Stanley (Minot State).

The Beavers tied DSU in the men’s team standings (599). The top eight finishers were all from these two schools. South Dakota School of Mines (635) and Jamestown College (665) rounded out the team scores. The Blue Hawk women finished in 3rd place in the team scoring (721) behind Black Hills State (704) and Minot State (711).

On September 3rd, Sean Sterkel (74) and Kelsey Boedeker (84) led Dickinson State’s men’s and women’s teams.

The teams resume play next Sunday and Monday September 14-15 at the Jamestown College Invitational at Jamestown, N.D.
